Lake Shikotsu
The name of “Lake Shikotsu” derives from the Ainu language “shikot” which means big caldera or hollow. To the Japanese, this make people imagine like dead bones, so they attempted to rename it ENGI, but this name did not stick.
40,000 years ago Shikotsu volcano erupts and rainwater stood into depression land. Lake Shikotsu never freeze even in frigid weather in Hokkaido because of incredible depth (Max depth: 363 meters, Average depth: 265 meters) and its depth is the second deepest lake next to lake Tazawa in Japan. The lake is surrounded by mountains on all sides and people cannot go in easily, so its appearance is so much natural and many wild animals inhabit there.

In addition, many events are held at lake and its around throughout all years. Especially Hyotou Ice Festival is one of the most famous festival in Hokkaido, having totaling 200,000 visitors every year. Ice sculptures of various sizes shines in natural blue because of its high transparency, and lighted up at night by colorful spot lights.
There are fireworks, wedding show, Japanese drum performance and also some shops selling hot drinks, foods and local original “Shikotsu candy” as well. After you enjoy this event much enough, you can visit natural hot spring to make tired body warm. Visit cold lake Shikotsu and enjoy hot event!!

About Hokkaido
Hokkaido is the second largest and located northernmost of Japan’s four main islands. Its weather is harsh in winter with much snowfall, below zero degree temperatures and frozen seas, while in summer it does not get as hot and humid as in the other parts of the country.

Seafood donburi is absolutely the one you should try when you go to Hokkaido.
On the other hand, Miso Ramen is also very famous food in Hokkaido. Even in Hong Kong there are many Hokkaido ramen restaurants, but if you had taken enough seafood you can try authentic Miso ramen in Hokkaido too.
